Will Acrylic Paint Stick To Rocks

Acrylic paint will stick really well to rocks. I tried some different paints but after a while, I always came back to the acrylic paint. First I used a brush and paint in tubes but then I started painting with posca pens, they are the best!

Good acrylic markers pens with round tips turned out to be the best for me, as they reliably apply the paint to the rough surface and then dry quickly. Posca acrylic markers are easy and practical to use.

You don’t need a brush or a glass of water, you don’t have to wash or clean anything after the work is done and you can start painting with it very precisely, easily, and spontaneously.

Especially when you start painting rocks, marker pens are really a good choice. You can use it to paint finely or flatly, and you can easily paint over areas that have already been painted. So you can change your work or correct something without getting into despair. Painting rocks is more fun if you are well equipped and have all the utensils you might need.

Posca Marker Pens Are My Favourites

I have had the best experiences with the markers from Posca. I bought a set of 10 with a few basic colors plus gold and silver.

The Posca markers are also available in glitter colors or in fine gold or silver. These are real eye-catchers on the stones!

The great thing about posca pens is that even if the tips are worn out, you don’t have to throw away the whole pen, there might still be painted in it, you could buy the tips and replace them

How To Paint on Rocks with Posca Pens

The pens must be shaken well and then “pumped up” with the tip. This creates overpressure in the pen and the paint is slowly pushed through the pen tip.

When used for the first time, this can take a few pumps. You will see when the color slowly migrates to the top.

You can now type spontaneously and design as you wish. If you want to get a certain word optimally on the stone, a small preliminary drawing with a pencil is recommended.

Hint: Make sure to always close the pens correctly and always store them horizontally. This way the markers last the longest and don’t dry out.

The Many Uses Of Acrylic Posca Pens

Do you sometimes feel like painting objects or spicing up surfaces with paint? High-quality acrylic markers are perfect for this! With them, you can let off steam creatively on smooth and rough surfaces. Whether you want to decorate wood, ceramic, glass, or even metal – good marker pens are fun to use.

For example, use Posca acrylic markers to paint stones, pimp up white sneakers or give old furniture a new look. Of course, you can use these special pens to conjure up beautiful works of art on paper or to decorate something that has already been designed. Posca acrylic markers are wonderfully suitable for drawing fine lines, creating filigree patterns or for painting larger areas.

The marker pens from Posca are both matt and opaque and score at the same time with their color intensity and luminosity. Incidentally, the tips of the acrylic markers can be turned around and exchanged. Do you need a replacement tip? No problem ordering them online.

FAQ:

How to paint with Acrylic marker pens?

Shake the pen well before each use. Inside the pen there are 2 balls that ensure that the acrylic paint is mixed, you know it from spray cans that you shake for use and you can hear it rattling. Then remove the cap, and place the tip of the pen on the surface. By repeatedly pressing the pen tip into the surface, or by pressing the pen shaft, the acrylic paint is pumped from the pen into the pen tip. If you press lightly on the surface, you will see the color in the pointed tip and it will change color. As soon as the paint comes out of the pen tip, you can start painting straight away.

What surfaces can I paint on with acrylic pens?

The acrylic pens can be used to paint on almost any surface, e.g. stone, wood, glass, fabric, cardboard, paper, canvas, plastic, porcelain, etc.

However, it is important that the surfaces to be painted are clean and free of grease. You should also clean your rocks well before painting so that they are free of dirt to assure that the acrylic paint will stick to rocks. Tiny particles that stick to rough, porous stone surfaces in particular, may otherwise prevent the acrylic paint from sticking to rocks well.

Are acrylic pens waterproof?

It always depends on what surface you are painting on. On porous surfaces such as wood or porous rocks, lots of paint is absorbed into the porous surface so it forms a thick layer and holds up quite well. It often doesn’t hold up as well on very smooth surfaces such as glass or porcelain. It is important to prepare surfaces, clean them well, and remove grease and dirt. Painted objects that get wet or are outside should be painted over with clear varnish to seal the surface.

Are Posca Pens toxic?

No, Posca Pens are non-toxic. Posca markers are acrylic-based, meaning there are no toxic solvents, turpentine or similar stuff inside. Acrylic paint is water-based.

You can tell by the fact that the Posca markers don’t smell. Some other non-water-based pens may have a strong smell. But better avoid smelly pens because that is usually a sign of chemical solvents which can also be toxic.

Are acrylic markers environmentally friendly?

Although acrylic paint is water-based and water-soluble and non-toxic, acrylic paint is not necessarily environmentally friendly.

To be a colored paint, acrylic paint must also contain color pigments. In addition, binders are needed that bind these pigments together and make the acrylic paint stick to rocks or any other surface you are painting on.

The pigments in acrylic paints are acrylic resin in other words plastic. You have heard about the microplastic problem in the world. Acrylic paints are a source of microplastics that should not be underestimated.

Pigments and binder resin are in a suspension in the water which works as the solvent in our water-based acrylic paint. When the water evaporates and the paint dries, the pigments and binder combine and form a water-insoluble, elastic layer.

When the dried paint rubs off, it ends up in the environment as microplastic.

Do I need To Seal Rocks Painted With Postca Pens?

You don’t necessarily have to seal the stones after painting them with acrylic paint. When dry, it forms a really hard durable coat and the acrylic paint will stick to rocks well.

However, sealing has the advantage that the color does not rub off so easily, the whole little work of art becomes more weatherproof and lasts longer. In addition, a nice clear varnish also gives the rock a good shine to make certain colors stand out even more.
